PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR ADULTS
Adulthood and the many roles that it imposes on us can at time feel overwhelming. New roles such as parent or spouse, new career positions, immigration, and new financial and social commitments such as a mortgage or a planning a wedding, can be exciting yet stressful events.
In the face of these events, adults may develop relationship issues, mood disorders, adjustment issues, or fears.
Psychotherapy can help you find ways to better manage your relationships and interactions, regulate emotions, and develop the necessary skills to deal with the new roles.

While depression, at times, is a normal reaction to a life event (for example, depression after a breakup), prolonged depression can lead to other issues such as anger management issues, physical issues, as well as negative impacts on scholastic and professional performance.
Psychotherapy is often recommended by family doctors and psychiatrists to address mood disorders such as depression. This method can be used simultaneously with medication to treat the mood disorder.
Psychotherapy helps clients to identify their negative thought patterns and learn strategies to challenge these negative thoughts and replace them with more adaptive and healthier thoughts. Clients will work towards gaining more insight on how their depression is impacting their personal and interpersonal lives while identifying the root causes of their depression.

A question that we are often asked is whether one should seek counseling or psychotherapy. To help you with this decision, we are going to talk about the main differences between psychotherapy and counselling:
- A counselor in Ontario is usually a professional, who holds a Master’s degree in a Counseling program and has been trained to give advice and/or recommendation to clients who seek help for their personal issues, interpersonal difficulties, and mostly focuses on behavioral issues. A counselor can help their clients set goals and identify solutions to improve their current situations. Often, counseling sessions are short-term.
- A counselor has to be a licensed member of an association (e.g., the Canadian Counseling and Psychotherapy Association). Although this title is not regulated in Ontario, a counselor has to be an active member of this association.
- A registered psychotherapist (RP) in Ontario is a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and holds a minimum of a Master’s degree or completes a training at one of the Institutes that are recognized by the CRPO. A psychotherapist in Ontario may practice independently or under the supervision of a supervisor.
- Psychotherapy sessions involve setting therapeutic goals that are treatment-based. Mental health issues such as anxiety disorders, mood Disorders, Phobias, etc., are often addressed in psychotherapy sessions. The focus of psychotherapy is often the gaining insight on the roots of the emotional and behavioral problems. Clients become more aware of their thought processes in relationship with their own ‘self’ and others.
- Given that counseling and psychotherapy can overlap and can be very similar, it is recommended that you read about the professional’s training, experience, and therapeutic approaches that they use to determine if they could be a good fit for you.
